A number of countries, especially in the Global South, saw low vaccination rates the better part of last year. But towards the end, there was a surge of deliveries with about 300 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines shipped to 144 low- and middle-income countries. Increasingly, supply seems less of a problem, fortunately, but logistics, uptake are, in many countries.
With the rise of the new variant, we could say that we are not out of the woods yet and we need to be more serious in increasing our vaccination rate especially in LMIC. This can only be made possible by financing and delivery of enough doses, as well as assistance in facilitating delivery, including to rural and remote regions.
As quoted in this article, “Given the enormous need — both to protect vulnerable people in the poorest nations and prevent the rise of new variants — the world must pursue every possible channel to get shots into arms and truly end the Covid-19 pandemic.”
What are your thoughts based on what you are experiencing in your country and locality? Is enough being done to ensure that everyone who can is vaccinated? And what do you think about WHO’s official target (of 70 % coverage by mid-2022)? Is it feasible and/or relevant in your country?
