ShakiraChoonara2014South AfricaMy vision and passion is to improve the health system in South Africa and other low-and-middle income settings. I have vast experience in research and advocacy in both qualitative and quantitative fields. As an undergraduate student I pursued qualitative research in the field of HIV/AIDS and persons with disabilities, with postgraduate research being largely quantitative focused on malaria prevention and received numerous research awards. I am currently pursuing a PhD in the field of Public Health focusing on strengthening financial management in the health sector. The doctoral studies are nested within the broader multi-country Resilient and Responsive Health System (RESYST) project which aims to improve governance at a local level in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. Notable achievements include being named the European Union Development Days Future Leader for Health in 2015, participation in the historic Sustainable Development Summit in 2015 and participation on a number of high-level global panels. During my tenure at university as well as in the work environment I have served and continue to hold executive positions on several committees and professional associations – recently elected as the Chairperson of the Public Health Association of South Africa’s Gauteng Branch. I am currently also serving as the head of communications on the Emerging Voices venture. Research interests extend beyond healthcare to the achieving the sustainable development agenda as well as tackling other issues such racism and advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities.
